Maps are an important aspect in any war and the same is true for the Civil War. A great map can place a General in the driver’s seat of a monumental victory. On the other hand, a bad map could potentially leave a General stumbling around in the dark until meeting horrific demise. In the spirit of “good maps,” the Hamilton County Geographic Information System Dept. set out to transpose Civil War era maps over maps of Hamilton County, Tennessee today. I think their work is splendid but also leaves one feeling sad. There is so much history dwelling beneath the streets of Chattanooga.
